Wayne Pivac’s division two outfit NEC Green Rockets has appointed former Australian scrum-half Nick Phipps as their captain for the 2024-25 season.
RugbyJP.com exclusively revealed on 5 October that the former London Irish player has signed a new two-year extension with the Chiba-based side.
Phipps, who turns 36 in January, made 72 Test appearances for the Wallabies and has been a key player since joining in 2022.
The promotion-chasers were defeated by top-flight side Black Rams Tokyo in last season’s promotion/relegation play-off.
Ex-Waratahs scrum half Phipps, who has diligently been studying Japanese, said: “I am proud to be the captain this season. It is also an honour to be the leader of such a great team.
“I will do my best to lead the team by utilising my experience and passion for rugby. I will always strive to improve every day as a player and as a person. It should be an exciting season for both the team and the crew.
“Please continue to support us. See you at the venue! GO ROCKETS!”
Fiji-born centre Maritino Nemani, 33, has been installed as a vice-captain.
“I am truly grateful to all the crew members who have supported us through good and bad times on our journey so far,” said Japan-qualified Nemani who is one of the club’s longest-serving players.
“We need your help and support to win in Division 2 and get promoted to Division 1,” he added.”
Prop Kosei Yamamoto, 25, will also serve as a vice-captain.
“I will inspire the team with my play and support Nick with all my might,” said Yamamoto.
“Team and crew, let's all work together to get promoted to Division 1!”
The Rockets kick off the new season on Sunday 22 December away at Red Hurricanes Osaka.
